Have you ever heard of "mulesing"? Something you don't really want to know about, but you have to know so that every sheep ends up like the one in our picture :)
Sheep farmers often still use the barbaric practice of cutting the wrinkles off the sheep's bottoms. This is done without any anesthesia. Simply with a sharp knife... the wrinkles are gone. This procedure was introduced decades ago to protect the sheep from fly infestation. Since wool-reared sheep in particular have a lot of wrinkles in order to produce more wool, this was seen as a simple method of protecting them from flies and their eggs. What was completely ignored was the pain that this procedure caused the animal.
So it's time to educate and do something for the animal from which we get this incredibly great product. For us, the wool that these animals produce for us is a year-round product and the best for us and our children. Products made from virgin wool keep you warm on cold days and cool on warm days. We would love to wear them on our skin all year round. And to give something back for this magical product, this year we are donating €1 for every wool product sold to an organization that campaigns against mulesing in sheep.
We would like to encourage you to only buy wool, felt and wool products that are guaranteed to be mulesing-free. With us, you can be sure that all of our items and fabrics have this seal. Because we know that we can't always take, we also have to give sometimes. And even if we are only small and take a small step, it is still a small step in the right direction, because change starts with becoming aware that something needs to be changed.
